Run for Dad
25th May 2010
Update
Well we all made it around the extremely difficult 'Cross Bay Challenge' course. We all agreed without doubt we have never endured a challenge like this before. The day went very well.
The weather was clear and bright at the start line but halfway through the weather turned and it became with the wind picking up with the showers arrived. The terrain was so difficult to run on. It was uneven / soft sand with 2 inches of water on the top. We were soaked to the skin for the whole race. To make matters worse at the 7 miles marker we had to wade through water which was waist deep for about 100 metres. This added to already heavy feeling legs and trust me sand does indeed get everywhere which was never going to make the run any easier ha-ha.
The winner of the race finished in 1hr 22min. Rich Dyer was the first of us to finishing clocking a fantastic time of 1hr 40mins. Placing him 28 position out of 325 runners. I came in next in a time of 1hr 47 mins. I quite frankly had nothing left in the tank, so knew i had given my all. Phil Parker finished in 2hrs 5mins which is an amazing time beings cramp set in, in both of his calf's at 10 miles. And if you have ever felt the pain of cramp you will know to then make it the last 3 miles in such pain is a great effort.
It was the best feeling ever to see the inflatable finish line and family cheering us all in. The lads could not give any more for such a great cause like Hope Against Cancer. By the time we have collected all sponsor money in we will be extremely close to out target of £1500.
I know my dad - Barry Newcombe would have been so proud of all three of us. It was an emotional run over the finish line. Thank you for all your support.
Simon Newcombe along with friends Phil Parker and Richard Dyer will take part in the Cross Bay Challenge in memory of Simon’s father who lost his battle with cancer last year. The race will take place on the first anniversary of his death on 6th June and the funds raised will be donated to Hope Against Cancer for local cancer research.
“My father, Barry Newcombe, was cared for and supported within the county and we would like to help others in Leicestershire. Hope Against Cancer is a local charity that may not get as much publicity or funding compared to the larger national charities and funds research which is greatly needed.” Said Simon. “My parents were soul mates and my father is greatly missed but I feel strongly about celebrating his life instead of mourning him and we intend to make this a very special family day.” He added.
The Cross Bay Challenge is the only half marathon in the world to cross a tidal bay. Runners will cross Morecambe Bay, from Flookburgh in Cumbria to Hest Bank in Lancashire. It has to be held on the 6th June as there is only one day in every year that the tide is far enough out for long enough to run the race.
“Not only will we have to run on sand, we will also have to be fit enough to get across the Bay before the tide comes in!” explained Simon.
“We are thrilled to have to have the support of Simon and his family. Hope relies on local people to raise funds so we can continue to research ways to treat this devastating disease.” Said Wendi Stevens, Hope Against Cancer Co-ordinator
