Side effects of radiotherapy

Treatment for cancer using chemotherapy or whole-body radiotherapy can itself cause leukaemia, a cancer originating in the bone marrow.  If this complication is to be prevented then the mechanisms involved must be understood. 

Our group has been investigating the effects of exposure to radiation on the bone marrow, in order to identify the properties of bone marrow stem cells that constitute them as one of the most susceptible tissues to secondary cancers following whole-body radiotherapy
