Cancer is the leading cause of mortality after heart disease. One of the most important advancements in cancer research is in the use of drugs from natural products to help prevent cancers from occurring. This concept is called chemoprevention.
There is good evidence that fruits and vegetables possess cancer delaying or preventing properties. The compounds responsible for the colour of berries and other fruits are thought to be responsible for this beneficial effect. This research will examine the effect of these fruit extracts on cancer growth in patients with established colorectal cancer.
The study has provided important data on the effect of these compounds in humans and could be lead to such compounds being used to help prevent cancer in healthy individuals
