Shirley Ann Grocock Fellowship (Analysis of ovarian cancer at the molecular level)

20th March 2008

SHIRLEY ANN GROCOCK FELLOWSHIP

Title: Analysis of ovarian cancer at the molecular level and to provide thereby a means of improving the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer patients or those who are at risk

Awarded to Dr Raffael Schaffrath

Researcher: Shanow Uthman

Department of Genetics, University of Leicester

Commencement: October 2008

Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of death from gynaecological disease and more than 14,000 American women have been known to be affected in 2003 alone.

In spite of the recent identification of an ovarian cancer gene (OVCA1) that appears to be involved in processes responsible for making proteins in the cell, the formation of ovarian cancer is hardly understood.

However, based on the recent realisation that OVCA1 influences protein synthesis, it appears that a clearer understanding of this gene should provide further insights into cell growth and cancer formation. Therefore, we will isolate novel factors that cross talk with OVCA1 and study whether the role that OVCA1 plays in protein synthesis is related to cancer formation.

The project is aimed at improving the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
