Title:Strategies to reduce morphine tolerance in cancer: Evaluation of novel bifunctional Opiods

Awarded to: Professor David Rowbotham and Professor David Lambert

Researcher: Mr Nikolaos Dietis

Department of CVS in Health Sciences

Commencement: October 2008

Cancer patients experience significant pain during treatment and in the final stages of their life. Opioid drugs such as morphine are associated with tolerance, respiratory depression and constipation.

Tolerance leads to dose-escalation and this produces more side effects. Potentially, this study offers a new approach to pain relief for cancer patients.  If we can understand how these compounds work and what they do in the long-term, we can develop a series of drugs that may improve both the quality of analgesia and of life for cancer patients.
